Switching from oil to gas: Should you choose cylinders or bulk tanks?

If you’re considering switching from oil to gas or transitioning from another heating source to LPG, one of the first decisions you’ll need to make is whether to opt for gas cylinders or a bulk tank. Both options have their advantages, but if this is your first time using gas, we recommend starting with cylinders before committing to a bulk tank setup.

Why start with gas cylinders?

A great way to determine your actual gas consumption is by beginning with a 47kg propane gas bottle. This allows you to assess your needs without making an immediate commitment to a bulk tank. Generally, a bulk tank solution becomes viable when your annual usage exceeds 2,500 litres. If your consumption is lower, gas cylinders may be a more practical and cost-effective option.

Considerations for bulk tanks

Bulk tanks require significant space, which can be a limiting factor for many homeowners. Additionally, there are strict regulatory space requirements for home bulk tanks:

  • A 1,200 or 2,000-litre tank must be positioned at least 3 metres away from buildings, property boundaries, and any fixed sources of ignition
  • A fire wall of solid construction can be installed on one or both sides of the tank, with a required minimum separation distance of 1.5 metres
  • The area around the tank must be clear of debris and vegetation to ensure safe LPG delivery
  • The maximum hose length for deliveries is 40 metres, which could impact accessibility

Bulk tanks can be installed above ground or below ground, but keep in mind that customers are typically responsible for the necessary civil work involved in the installation.

Which option is right for you?

If your yearly gas consumption is low, 47kg propane cylinders remain a flexible and efficient choice. You can opt for 2 x 47kg packs or 4 x 47kg packs, which should sufficiently meet your needs without the complexities of a bulk tank installation.
