White Diesel
White diesel is the standard fuel used in road vehicles; it’s the diesel you’ll find at any petrol station. Also known as DERV (Diesel Engine Road Vehicle), it’s a clear or slightly amber-coloured fuel refined from crude oil. As well as powering road vehicles, it’s also suitable for generators, engines, and domestic heating systems.
What is white diesel used for?
- Road vehicles: cars, vans, trucks, motorbikes, and HGVs
- Commercial power generators and engines
- Domestic heating systems
Any vehicle or machinery that runs on red diesel can also run on white diesel, since the two fuels are chemically identical. The difference is purely in how they’re taxed. Because of that, the reverse does not apply: it is illegal to use red diesel in road-going vehicles.
White diesel: What you need to know
- Other names for white diesel: It’s also known as DERV, road diesel, forecourt diesel, ultra-low sulphur diesel (ULSD), and taxed diesel. These all refer to the same product
- White diesel is taxed at the full rate of fuel duty, which is why it costs more than red diesel. The lower rate applied to red diesel reflects its restricted, non-road use
- White diesel can be stored for up to 12 months without significant degradation. You can store up to 30 litres on your property without any legal obligation to notify anyone – useful if you’re keeping a small reserve for a generator or heating system.
