If you have an open fire or a log burner at home but are concerned about how sustainable it is as a heat source, you’re in the right place.
Unlike carbon-rich coal, oil or gas, wood is not actually a fossil fuel. In fact, you could argue wood is a carbon-neutral fuel – here’s why: when a tree grows, it absorbs carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. When that tree is cut down and burned as firewood, it releases roughly the same amount of CO2. So, in theory, it’s carbon neutral.
But the key phrase there is ‘in theory’; this is only true when forests are responsibly managed and replanted, so that new trees continue absorbing carbon as others are harvested.
When that cycle is maintained, firewood heating doesn’t contribute to the overall greenhouse gas balance the way fossil fuels do.
How do you choose firewood that comes from responsibly managed sources? We’ll show you…
Where our firewood comes from
All of our firewood comes from sustainable forestry and coppicing schemes, and local woodland. We choose our sources specifically to ensure that wood supplies are managed responsibly for the long term. Sourcing locally also helps to keep our own carbon footprint as low as possible and supports woodland management here in Sussex. So, when you buy firewood from us, you can be sure you’re getting fuel that’s produced sustainably.
What is coppicing – and why is it important?
Coppicing is an ancient forestry technique. Hardwood trees are grown then cut back to ground level, which stimulates vigorous regrowth and allows the same trees to be harvested repeatedly over many years.
Hardwoods (like ash and birch) produce the best type of logs for firewood – they are denser than softwoods like pine and so burn for longer and generate a sustained heat. They’re ideal for coppicing, and coppiced woodland supports rich biodiversity alongside its practical purpose. There’s a reason this centuries-old method hasn’t changed in all that time: it works.
Why seasoning matters for sustainable firewood
Sourcing sustainable firewood is only part of the picture. How the wood is prepared makes an equally important difference to how cleanly and efficiently it burns.
Freshly cut wood can contain up to 45% moisture. Burn it at that level and you’ll get a weak, smoky fire that wastes much of the energy in the wood and releases more harmful particles into the air.
Here at Four Seasons Fuel, we dry all our firewood down to a moisture content of 20% or below, either through natural seasoning (drying in our barns over many months) or kiln-drying. The result is firewood that lights more easily, burns hotter, and produces far less smoke. In short, properly dried wood makes the most of every log, which is better for your fireplace or stove, your chimney, and the environment.
All the firewood we supply also complies with the latest British standards on fuel emissions, and our seasoned logs and kindling carry the Ready to Burn certification – the government-backed scheme that guarantees moisture content of 20% or less.
What to look for when buying sustainable firewood
If you want to make sure the firewood you’re buying is genuinely sustainable, here’s what to check:
- Sourcing: Is the wood from managed woodland, coppice schemes, or certified sustainable forestry? Responsible suppliers should be able to tell you where their wood comes from
- Moisture content: Look for the Ready to Burn logo, which guarantees the wood has been dried to 20% moisture or below. Wet wood is less efficient and more polluting
- Local sourcing: The shorter the supply chain, the lower the transport emissions. Locally sourced firewood reduces the carbon cost of getting the wood to your door
- Species: Hardwoods such as ash, birch and beech burn longer and produce more heat than softwoods, so you use less wood overall
